PERIODS

Some periods of our growth are so confusing that we don’t even recognize that growth is happening. You might feel hostile, angry, weepy, hysterical, or even depressed. It would never occur to you, unless you stumbled upon a book or met someone who could explain it, that you were actually in the process of changing and becoming larger, than you were before.

Whenever we grow, we tend to feel it, just as a young seed must feel the weight of the earth as it seeks to break out of its shell on its way to becoming a plant. Often the feeling is anything but pleasant. Imagine you and your friend decide to move in together. At first, it’s exciting, but soon you start to notice each other’s habits and values. You might feel frustrated by your friend’s different routine.

But what is most unpleasant is not knowing what is happening. Those long periods when something inside you seems to be waiting, holding its breath, unsure about what the next step should be, eventually become the periods you wait for. You realize that you are being prepared for the next phase of your life and that, in all probability, a new level of your personality is about to be revealed.

Think about a time when you decided to pursue a new hobby. At first, it’s fun and exciting, but then you hit a point where it becomes challenging. You might feel frustrated because you’re not progressing as quickly as you’d like. This frustration can lead to feelings of inadequacy. However, this is a normal part of the growth process. By encouraging you and pushing through the tough times, you learn and grow. You become stronger because you’ve faced and overcome a challenge.

In friendships, growth can be confusing. Maybe you and your friend are drifting apart because of different life paths. You feel hurt and confused, wondering if your friendship is ending. This period of uncertainty can be painful, but it’s also a chance for growth. By having honest conversations and understanding each other’s needs, you can find new ways to support each other. Sometimes, this means accepting changes and finding a new balance in your friendship, which ultimately strengthens your bond.

With family, growth can be particularly challenging. Imagine you’re becoming more independent and making decisions that your family doesn’t agree with. This can lead to conflicts and feelings of isolation. However, this struggle is part of your growth journey. By standing firm in your decisions and communicating your reasons, you’re developing your identity and learning to navigate complex family dynamics. This growth process helps you build stronger, more respectful relationships with your family members.

The most challenging part of growth is often the uncertainty and discomfort that accompany it. You might feel like you’re in a dark tunnel with no end in sight. But it’s crucial to remember that these feelings are temporary and part of the process. Each struggle and each moment of confusion is a step towards a better version of yourself.

Personal growth doesn’t happen in a straight line. It’s a roller coaster, periods of intense struggle followed by moments of clarity and progress. Embracing this journey, even when it’s uncomfortable, is essential. Recognize that the confusion and discomfort are signs that you’re evolving.
